Providence City Map

We’ve all seen lots of maps of popular tourist destinations from the perspective of the traveler but I want to create an atlas, a collection of maps, made by the people who live in those places.

What is it like to live in someone else’s vacation?

I don’t want the secret beaches or the locals’ only hangouts, I want to know where people work, relax, get groceries and where they used to imagine living. I want to see the other side of paradise.

If you live in a touristy place, make a map of what your home looks like to you from your perspective and send it my way.

I made a now fairly popular scuba diving atlas of Monterey, California and now I’m working on the rest of the state. This is a huge work that has taken me years and it’ll be a while yet to update the field guides, context maps, history, geology and wildlife of California’s diveable coastline.

There are a ton of really unimpressive maps of Providence and a handful of extraordinary but not exactly visitor-friendly maps. PVD Tour Company is doing great work introducing people to the city’s culture and history and I have some drafts of work that could help their mission. I don’t have a business model for how to make any money off of this project though.
